TECH SPOTL IGHT

lighting provider in serving the business jet
market. "As technology has evolved, fluorescent became something of the past and we've
been developing LED systems both for interior, as well as exterior. From an interior perspective, I think LEDs have certainly become
the norm. That is, what every aircraft is rolling
off the assembly line with right now. Much

of the retrofit community has also adapted
LED technology," Scover pointed out. "I think
when an operator or an airline is looking to
differentiate themselves in a cost effective
manner, they turn to lighting."
For the 15 years that Scover has been at
Collins, he said the company has done nothing but LED design, though they still offer

other types of lighting in a support role. For
Honeywell, Lenz echoed that statement. "All
of our new lights that we develop are LED,
but we still ship an extraordinary number of
halogen lighting solutions. And when we're
talking about anti-collision lights, that's
mostly xenon lighting solutions. So, those
are still present in many aircraft worldwide

Circadian Cabin
Cabin lighting is going beyond just
helping passengers see, to helping
them be, with the introduction of
Human Centric Lighting, which
promises to help create a more
comfortable flight by reducing jetlag.
The lighting is being brought to
aircraft in an alliance between SCHOTT,
jetlite and Lufthansa Technik. The final
"product" of the collaboration is still
being developed and expected to be
integrated for the first time in Q3/2020.
SCHOTT's HelioJet technology is the
lighting behind the full color system,
while jetlite's software - jetlite Cabin
X - helps sync the cabin lighting with the passengers'
circadian rhythm and Lufthansa Technik integrates it all
into the aircraft."Light does not only enable us to see, it
affects what we do and how we feel. The passenger's inner
clock can be supported by orienting the lighting solution
to the natural course of daylight. By providing the right
type of light at the right time, it is even possible to adapt
the biorhythms of air travel passengers to the destination
time zone, and therefore reduce jet lag. Warm light for
relaxation is supplied during periods of rest, whereas
cooler light provides stimulation for more active phases.
Especially in times of ever-increasing sources of stress
through travelling and business, human centric lighting
in an aircraft can significantly increase the passenger
experience," said Jelka Huge, project management, jetlite.
"The Human Centric Lighting approach is based on an
LED wash and ceiling light system, designed for use in
linefit and retrofit projects. The full color system uses the
HelioJet technology from SCHOTT, which continuously
ensures homogeneous illumination and constant light
stability. This flicker-free and authentic light distribution
results in significantly fewer headaches and increased wellbeing among passengers and crew. HelioJet works with
just two diodes, which feed the light from both ends into an
optical light converter, " described Dr. Armin Plichta, head
of business development aviation/automotive at SCHOTT.
jetlite said that Human Centric Lighting is a step beyond
mood lighting, guiding the inner clock of the human body.
Some of the benefits of Human Centric Lighting include:

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2020

* Proven reduction in jet
lag and headaches
* New level of customer satisfaction
* Lighting-pilot requires zero
intervention by crew
* Unrivaled durability
* Easy exchange of single lights
* Low maintenance costs of
the hardware solution
"jetlite has developed software,
jetlite Cabin X, that translates scientific
research in the fields of Human
Centric Lighting and chronobiology
into lighting scenarios that reduce
jet lag for passengers. Considering
flight parameters, such as routes, directions and time
zones, the jetlite software steers an aircraft's cabin
lighting in the most efficient way," explained Huge.
"The jointly-developed system makes use of SCHOTT's
HelioJet LED cabin illumination technology that enables
a homogeneous light distribution as well as a high color
stability throughout the cabin. It is combined with jetlite's
intelligent automation software integrated into Lufthansa
Technik's »nice« cabin lighting control system. The new
lighting-pilot technology permanently calculates and
executes the optimum illumination sequence for any flight
route and phase or any desired lighting choreography,
without the need for cabin crew to intervene," Plichta added.
For installation, SCHOTT's HelioJet lighting system
replaces the conventional lighting. Pilchta added:
"Lufthansa Technik offers internationally-approved
integration, certification and validation in the area
of lighting control and system integration."
jetlite Cabin X can not currently be integrated into
existing cabin management system without modifications,
but in the future will be integrated into Lufthansa
Technik's »nice« lighting control system. The »nice«
controller is installed in the Electronic Bay of the aircraft
and in addition, user-friendly flight attendant panels
to control the lighting will be integrated. Furthermore,
jetlite Cabin X will also be implemented in a control
system that enables the CIDS (Airbus) or CSS (Boeing)
to directly steer the jetlite lighting," said Huge.
