CHALLENGES

The automotive industry presents
many test challenges, including ensuring the quality of ICs controlling everything from infotainment to ADAS as
well as the compound semiconductors
serving drivetrain electrification and
battery-charging functions. ICs demand
design and test strategies that can ensure
quality throughout a vehicle's lifecycle,
while the increasing use of wide-bandgap
devices requires high-voltage test and
burn-in strategies.
In addition, the proliferation of control units and sensors connected by
high-speed serial buses such as SAE
Ethernet, BroadR-Reach, SENT, and
CAN FD, presents further challenges.
And the rollout of 5G and related V2X
technologies for automotive applications
spurs need for cybersecurity test. RF/
microwave instruments have a key role
to play in all these applications as well

as in measuring the materials properties
of components, like bumpers.
Precompliance test
The need for EMC test is also great, with
manufacturers performing increasing
amounts of precompliance test before
full compliance test. In addition, there
is increasing value in linking aftersales
service with engineering tools.
Another key trend is a reduction in the exuberance surrounding fully autonomous vehicles,
with more emphasis on an evolutionary approach in which
individual yet interconnected
driving functions become autonomous. In
addition, simulation of all these different
functions, including battery packs and
multiple motors, is critical to ensuring
success. The vehicle is also increasingly
interacting with home renewable power
systems in V2G and V2H applications,
further complicating test.
And finally, all these trends are playing out in the age of COVID-19, which
is changing how automotive companies spend money and manage supply
chains, driving the need for extensive
data analytics.
