UBLIC TRANSPORTATION CONTINUES TO
be the safest mode of transportation, based on
data collected by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA). While some
safety statistics are creeping up, when the crash
risk and crime risk is compared to other modes,
transit maintains its higher safety status.

Safety

This year, the COVID-19 pandemic has reshaped the
safety narrative, not only within the transit industry
but in all tasks people accomplish as part of daily life.
Multiple studies have determined use of transit, with
proper precautions, such as wearing face masks and
maintaining physical distancing, does not increase the
risk of transmission. A report from TransitCenter, " A
Transit Agenda for the COVID-19 Emergency, " found
riders were taking transit less during the pandemic,
but not ditching it entirely as a mode of transport.
For the report, TransitCenter partnered with YouGov on a series of focus groups that examined attendee
experiences using public transit during the pandemic.
