hen trouble shooting a vehicle electrical concern,
having the right tools can make a huge difference.
Electrical troubleshooting can be intimidating. Electricity
is this mysterious invisible stuff somehow running around
through all these little copper " pipes " we call wires and
making things work like lights and motors. It doesn't
have to be so scary. Learning just a few basic electrical
principles can go a long way towards understanding what
is going on in electrical circuits.
Voltage (Volts) is a force like pressure in a water pipe. But just
because there is pressure does not automatically mean there is flow.
Current (Amps) is the amount of electrons actually flowing through
the pipe.
Resistance (Ohms) is any restriction or opposition to flow.
And if you have even vaguely heard the term Ohm's Law, it is the
electrical rule that basically states these 3 things always work
together. In the systems we work on, the Voltages are usually fixed
at either 12 or 24 Volt, so for the most part, the voltage never
changes. The Resistance of the component being operated will be
what determines how much current (Amps) the circuit will draw.
More Resistance equals less Amps, less Resistance equal more Amps.
You cannot force more Amps into a circuit and a component will not
draw more current than its Resistance allows. (Unless you applied
more pressure/voltage.)
So now if we are going to be testing electrical circuits, and we can't
see this electron pressure or flow, we need special tools that can
measure these things:
* A Voltmeter can measure electrical pressure and it reads in units
called Volts. More volts equal more electrical pressure.
* An Ammeter can measure the actual electron flow in units called
Amps. More Amps equals more electrical flow.
* An Ohmmeter can measure the amount of restriction or resistance
to flow, and it reads in units called Ohms, More Ohms equals more
resistance to flow.
A Multi-Meter combines all these measuring functions (and more)
into one tool. One of the first tools any electrical troubleshooter
should invest in is a good quality Digital Multi-Meter or DMM. The
