One Louder
As the band Spinal Tap gets set to make another film,
we are reminded that we all want to turn our amps to " 11. "

hile
browsing my
Facebook feed, I was
reminded that the
movie Spinal Tap is one of my
all-time favorites. I bring this
up now because the part I love
and quote often is where Nigel
Tufnel (Christopher Guest) tells
Rob Reiner that his amp goes
to " 11, " not ten. " That's one
louder, " he says.
If you're reading these pages, it's probably
safe to assume you love tools and use them
in your professional life. What I love about
tools is that each has a different purpose;
some have many uses, but all play a role in
getting the job done.
Every tech wants that tool to get the
job done better. As witnessed in our Big
Time Boxes feature, no two tech's toolbox
is the same. We customize our tools to fit
our needs.
If your customer wants a custom car with
one-off wheels and tires and a custom-built
engine, are you really working on that car
with your big box store tools? Customers
are impressed by a giant toolbox, a shiny set
of wrenches, and your knowledge and skill.
In my shop, I have my racing tools separate
from other tools. These are the ones
that are a specialty for the cars and karts I
race, but also, they are my good, professional
tools. They are, in a sense, " one better " than
the regular tools I keep at home. And those
are not to be confused with the tools I use to
work on my house for home improvement
projects. I seldom use my car tools for the
house. That's crazy!
I want my tools to have different uses and
be stored in separate places - whether in different
drawers in the toolbox or a separate
toolbox altogether. So when I'm working on
my vehicles or doing brake repair jobs for
friends and family, I like to have my tools
in one place, not mixed in with the paint
brushes or putty knives. Tool storage is an
issue for those of us with multi-tasking lives.
Our tools are like Spinal Tap's Marshall
Amp. The tools we use (and buy) give us the
ability to perform at our best. When you feel
like you're not at the highest level, we always
want to go one louder and turn it up to 11!
Today's tools have many more features
than the tools of even a decade ago. Think
about all of the electronic scanners and
digital tools you have in your toolbox today.
They offer far more functionality than the
tools we used to have.
The boys in Spinal Tap may not have
realized what they were creating back in
1984. But the One Louder phenomenon
has spread far and wide since then in the
YouTube | Mark Jennings
automotive tool industry. So stay tuned
for Spinal Tap II, which is rumored to be
coming out soon to commemorate the 40th
anniversary of the first film. Will the amps
go up to " 12 " this time?
