What are some red flags that people should look
out for?
It's important to see the business proposition for diversity.
A recent article in the Wall Street Journal talked about
diversity being a big issue at many companies a year or
two years ago, and now those companies are pulling back.
Try to find companies that value diversity as a part of their
culture and business purpose.
When it comes to flexibility, what are some things
candidates can look for?
Smaller companies generally tend to be more nimble and
offer more opportunities for progression and responsibility.
In many ways, it can be more rewarding than at larger
companies where there are a lot of people and roles are
harder to determine. I think it's important to find those
smaller companies that tend to be run well and who might
offer those opportunities for you.
It sounds like the candidate should be interviewing
the company as much as the company interviews
the candidate. Would you say that's correct?
Absolutely. I would treat it that way. In the interview
process, we ask candidates, 'What questions do you
have? What concerns do you have? Where would you
like to see your career?' Those questions are viewed as
standard questions, but they do a couple of things: it
shows the preparedness of the candidate, and interest, is
the candidate just a butterfly going from here to there,
or is the interest sincere? These are questions that can be
tailored for a candidate to ask a potential employer.
How can conferences like NBMBAA help candidates
make better choices? What would you say is an
advantage to coming to the National Black MBA
conference?
I think one distinct advantage to attending Black MBA
is that you will see companies that show their interest in
recruiting black colleagues.
It's also a way to build a relationship. There are times when
a company may be interviewing, and they may not have
that perfect role for you. But if you can build a relationship
with someone who represents a business unit or an HR
professional and keep that contact going, an opportunity
may arise in the future that you find really appealing.
The conference provides so many receptions. And
receptions are an opportunity to meet people and get a real
view of what it's like to work in the company. In a normal
interview process, you really don't get that. It's a vibrant
environment with a lot of like-minded people. Just by
talking to a lot of people, you'll learn quite a bit.
