I won't lie; the imposter syndrome kicked in a bit. But you know
what? That feeling was quickly replaced with excitement and
determination. The NBMBAA® was not just an organization;
it was a community of support and empowerment for black
professionals, and I knew I belonged here.
Meaningful Connections
The impact of my NBMBAA® membership and the connection
to specific individuals has been nothing short of transformative. It
all started with that conference last year, which turned out to be a
game-changer for me. The insights and knowledge I gained during
the event were exactly what I needed at that point in my life. I
realized it was time to take a leap of faith and go after what I truly
wanted.
During a memorable night, I had the pleasure of encountering
a real-life Princess Tiana, or rather, Shawn Graham. She exuded
a boss-like presence, and I was determined to meet her. So, with
my heart pounding, I approached her, surrounded by cameras and
a crowd. I introduced myself
as Makayla and expressed my
admiration for her as a boss.
The way she received me was
genuinely heartwarming. Her
kindness and love enveloped me;
we even had a little impromptu photo shoot. I felt like the most
beautiful and loved girl at that moment.
You see, what Shawn didn't know was that I had been going
through a tough time before coming to that event. Life was
challenging, and I had shed tears in anticipation of attending.
Her encouragement and belief in me were like a lifeline. She saw
beyond the surface and recognized the strength it took for me to
be there, standing tall despite my imposter syndrome struggles.
After that encounter, I became determined to embrace my
authentic self and overcome imposter syndrome. Shawn's words
and belief in my potential resonated deeply with me. It was as if
she ignited a fire within me to be confident, powerful, and destined
for greatness.

My journey with NBMBAA® and connection with individuals like
Shawn have played a vital role in shaping my life. They've given
me the strength to pursue my dreams, to believe in myself, and to
push past any barriers holding me back. Shawn became more than
just a professional contact; she became a close confidante, cheering
me on as I pursued my dreams and faced life's hurdles. Her belief
in me continued to bolster my self-confidence, and her mentorship
provided invaluable guidance on my professional journey.
The Village Was There
When I was invited to Silicon Valley with MLT, I found myself
in a tough spot financially and health-wise. My mom's health
was deteriorating, and I was facing my own health issues. I
reached out to what I called my " village, " asking for help,
and the responses I received moved me to tears.
NBMBAA®, despite being a recent member
at that time, aided me with financial
support for business attire and
offered encouragement during this
challenging period. When I won
the scholarship for cyber corps and
women in technology, I was overjoyed and
couldn't wait to share the news with my mentors.
The Association has been a source of unwavering
support, love, and care. Through all my ups and downs, they
guided me and celebrated my victories with me. I am forever
grateful for their presence in my life.
The NBMBAA® community has provided valuable networking
opportunities and shown me the power of family beyond blood
relations. The bonds I've formed with my LinkedIn family and
the connections I've made within this community have been
life changing. They've stood by me through my darkest days and
celebrated with me during my brightest moments.
This community has given me the support and love I needed to
overcome my struggles, and I can proudly say that the storm is
over. I am in a better place now, and it's all thanks to the incredible
connections and support I've found within the NBMBAA®
network. I'm forever grateful for the family that chooses me every
day, and I cherish the lifelong bonds I've formed with mentors,
friends, and loved ones along this incredible journey.
Moving Forward
Leaps of growth and personal achievements have defined my
path. The entrepreneurial spirit within me ignited as I established
my furniture upcycling business, " Sweet Home Finds, " a venture
that brings joy to me and contributes positively to my financial
stability. Supported by scholarships that have eased my journey,
I am positioned comfortably and intentionally in pursuit of my
aspirations.
My focus on cybersecurity remains steadfast, and my vision
extends beyond corporate walls. The government sector beckons as
a platform for me to give back and provide protection to a broader
audience. Moreover, my determination to venture into real estate
this year underscores my commitment to community welfare,
aiming to offer resources and shelter that empower those around
me. My motivation is fueled not only by my desire for personal
success but by the greater good I can achieve.
As Maya Angelou wisely advised, I carry my ancestors on this
journey. Their sacrifices and perseverance have paved the way
for my presence here today. I embrace the responsibility of
representing their impact, and I reject ignorance in favor of
wisdom. With faith as my anchor and the Lord at the center of my
life, I stand grounded as blessings continue to flow.
Looking ahead, I visualize myself delivering a speech at the
prestigious NBMBAA®, an organization that mirrors my values
and aspirations. At that moment, I will inspire a nation, sharing my
story of growth, resilience, and triumph. My relationship with the
NBMBAA® will remain a vital thread in my narrative, nurturing
connections and fostering opportunities that align with my longterm
ambitions.
