any of us can fill in the rest of this time-honored
musical intro that so beautifully captures the essence
of true-blue friendship. The kind that stands the
test of time, takes a licking, and keeps on ticking, and knows
where all the proverbial bodies of secrets are buried. This is
the friendship shared between Cherrese Belt and Monica
Victorino. Thirty years of dedication, determination, and
ultimately DE&I dominance.
Cherrese, who serves as HR Director, Diversity, Equity &
Inclusion for Dairy Farmers of America, met Monica while
in high school. As the new kid on the block starting 11th
grade and a bit shy, she was instantly drawn to Victorino,
who manages Diversity Engagement & Events for Discover,
because of her vivacious personality.
The two connected like " Pam and Gina, " locking
in as best friends at their Los Angeles high school,
sharing activities, interests, and ambitions. They
even had their own codeword. " OK, Mo, " which
would invite pause and careful examination
whenever they were faced with a new or complex
situation. This phrase was the key to unlocking
a whole new world for the pair that pointed to a
shared path in Diversity Equity & Inclusion (DE&I)
after Monica influenced Cherrese to work in
Human Resources. That simple phrase took on a
whole new depth of meaning.
A recent Glassdoor survey published by SHRM revealed
that 27 percent of companies reviewed on the site invested in
DE&I programs in 2017. Access to DE&I programs increased
to 39 percent in 2020 before peaking at 43 percent in 2021.
However, that number fell to 41 percent in 2022. Monica and
Cherrese have rode these waves in tandem and supported this
work, often feeling like a singular voice amidst a cacophony of
voices in a crowded room.

To do this work is to spend a great deal of your time defending
the work, shares the pair. Companies must be made to
understand its value but often times only understand value if it
is expressed on balance sheets. So, if DE&I can't immediately
show ROI, then it might end up DOA.
