Pedo Simplicity with Fenderprime
After taking and taking from Dentaltown over the last year or two, I’m finally posting a
“dental pearl” of my very own. I ordered the short fender prime wedges a while back and
began using them in back-to-back Class II situations on pedo patients. Although contour
junkies might disagree, I’ve found this system to produce a great clinical result. I typically use amalgam or
riva hv lc for my pedo fillings. There’s always flash
but easy to clean while the matrix/wedge is in place.
The advantages I see: it’s a time saver (cooperation with kids can expire without notice), tight, long,
broad contacts (maintain spacing and prevent food
impaction), protects adjacent fillings from gouging
during carving/finishing and it’s simple! n

What kind of gingival emergence do you get with these? I was always concerned about
the “step” between the wedge and the metal surface. n

The emergence is a bit of triangular as per the shape of the wedge but it’s no overhang
and definitely a better margin than those found on highly successful stainless-steel crowns
(SSC) so in situations where SSC isn’t indicated this is a great compromise. As long as it’s
sealed and lasts until exfoliation it’s a success in my book, anyway. If I had to worry about
the kids pulling the fillings out with the floss I probably wouldn’t have had to restore them
in the first place so haven’t had issues with that (yet). n
