How Personable Are You With Staff?
Townies weigh the pros and cons of maintaining a personal relationship with their staff members

Do you share details of your personal life with your staff? Do you take them out to dinner
and have office vacations together? Do you treat them like family or as subordinates?
Being a new owner, I see things differently now, compared with when I used to be an
associate. I don't like sharing details of my life with staff, nor do I want to know too much about
their personal lives. Often, the more I get to know them, the more questions arise and I end up
learning things I would rather not know. I don't mind buying them lunch at the office or even
the biannual dinner, but I absolutely would not want to spend any of my vacation time with
them unless it is an important CE course.
Patients are a different story; I can turn the charm on with them and I enjoy getting to know
them and gaining their trust. But staff are different-getting too personable always leads to the
crossing of boundaries. Maybe it's me or maybe I don't like this particular set of staff, I don't
know. Am I jumping through the normal hoops of ownership or am I just cold? ■

a lot about me because we have
worked together for many years. However, they know
there is always a clear line that I am their boss and while
we can all be friendly, there is always the boss line.
There is a common mistake that the key to a good
staff that acts as you want and works as hard as you
want is to be as friendly as you can. The assumption is
that staff will not and could not take advantage of your
friendship and in actuality would work harder because
of your friendship. Unfortunately, the reality isn't that.
That's leadership.
So, be friendly. You should, since your work environment is a large part of your life. There's no reason not
to be friendly and make work sterile. But always keep in
mind that "friendly" has boundaries that can be taken
advantage of. ■
