Agreed. I don't check BP on every patient, but I read the room. Flushed face, out of breath
getting into the chair, big med Hx are all getting BP checked. One, it covers my ass, and two, it
may ultimately save the patient's life by getting them to see a doctor. Lately, my issue has been
this one patient with low BP. Two years ago, we did a crown on this patient. She got up to pee
4-5x while she was in the offi ce. Finished my crown, patient got up and was talking to my FD
for 30 minutes, then got weak and was about to pass out. I left the offi ce to run an errand since
she was fi ne and talked to the FD for a few minutes before I left with no problem. Had to call
an ambulance. Turns out she had two doctors who never bothered to check what she was taking.
She was taking double the dose of two diuretics and all the peeing caused her BP to tank. Patient
got in with cardiology and got it adjusted. Fast-forward to last week, the patient is back for a
crown prep and DI fi nal impression with the same damn symptoms. I took her BP: 95/53. Nope
nope, nope. You are not passing out again. Patient got in with a new cardiologist who got her
meds adjusted, so hopefully I can get her treatment going. Don't sleep on the BPs. ■

I'd get in the habit of every patient. A few days ago had a guy who wasn't on meds, wasn't
overweight and seemed " normal. " Three different cuffs read 240+ over 140+ consistently. He
was only there for a cleaning. We told him we could not see him and he needed to see his doc
asap. It may seem like overcaution but that guy has an event in your chair and you are screwed. ■

doc takes my BP. It's a good
thing. We took the BP of every
patient in the military, circa 1975. We caught a lot of
undiagnosed HBP.
The very last thing you need is someone stroking
out in your chair. 240/140 is a walking, talking time
bomb with a very short fuse. ■

feelings about this. Of course,
BP is a very important thing.
But when it comes to postponing ext's because of it
(especially with swelling), I have a hard time. Are there
any studies about patients stroking out during dental
procedures due to HTN? ■

gical center. A lot of the patients
are pain patients. They cancel
surgeries every single day due to HBP. So it's not just
us. It's likely not a high chance of having an event, but
when it happens, you could lose everything. No thanks.
And in the situation of the OP, the guy had several
months to correct it but didn't. ■
