message board Am I Overreacting to a Situation With My Boss? DrMonty9 Member Since: 03/23/21 Post: 1 of 52 I have been an associate at this practice for about eight months. During that time there have been a few incidents that bothered me but were addressed and I always fi gured that being an associate isn't always going to be perfect. The owner of the practice owns three total practice locations and I travel to two of them four days a week. Yesterday, there was a new patient on the schedule with a CC of a LL tooth broken. Upon his arrival, we took the appropriate radiographs and I completed my clinical examination. The patient stated that he had a fi lling placed on that tooth about 6 months before and that he felt it was never quite right. My examination revealed a lost DO restoration with no recurrent caries and a fairly conservative box design. The radiograph did not show any evidence of pathology. I explained the fi ndings to the patient and recommended a new DO restoration be placed. The patient agreed to the treatment and I completed the restoration. After I dismissed the patient, I looked at my phone and had a message from my boss asking why I didn't do a crown on this tooth. I explained my reasons for not recommending a crown and my boss continued to question my treatment plan, including comments about my schedule not being busy so I should have " done the right thing " and crowned the tooth. The conversation ended after I reiterated that I did not believe the tooth required a full-coverage crown at this time and she responded that after looking at the X-ray, she did not agree with me. I understand every dentist has different treatment philosophies and we have had some issues in the past with her being a more aggressive dentist than I am, but I feel livid that my treatment plan is being questioned like this. I feel like it's my license and I should have the ability to treatment-plan as I feel comfortable. Am I out of line or is this a fair assessment of the situation? ■ 10/27/2021 tricuspid Member Since: 08/09/07 Post: 3 of 52 I am happy to have a conversation with someone about treatment planning philosophies and expectations. But I will not tolerate someone blowing up my cellphone after I've fi nished seeing a patient and questioning what I've done. All without ever actually seeing the patient or the tooth in person. ■ 10/27/2021 DrMonty9 Member Since: 03/23/21 Post: 4 of 52 Thanks for the feedback so far! This is the PA taken yesterday. ■ 10/27/2021 WolfpackDDS Member Since: 06/18/14 Post: 12 of 52 Your license, your call. Don't put your livelihood ahead of this dentist's boat payment. I had a gig like this right before I bought my practice. The owner had a reputation of being a " cutter " because cutting teeth makes more money than pulling teeth. Lots of biologic width violations, lots of miracle mix. Several times he would send endo to me because he hated it/referring out on a hopeless tooth, and I would get chewed out for pulling the tooth. I stood fi rm and eventually he backed off. Sometimes you just have to stand your ground politely or the owner will walk all over you. What's the worst case? Do you fi nd another job where the owner respects your decision as a fellow doctor? ■ 10/27/2021 22 JUNE 2022 // dentaltown.comhttps://www.dentaltown.com/messageboard/thread.aspx?s=2&f=138&t=360493&g=1 http://www.dentaltown.com
