I know since the COVID-19 pandemic, most of
our staff salaries have gone through the roof, but I
would like to know what's considered a good profit
margin nowadays for most offices. And specifically,
what is an acceptable profit margin for an associate
dental office? (By that, I mean I am the owner but
don't work at it.) I have two offices: one close to my
house, at which I am the main doctor and profitability
is much better, and the other one that is fully
associate-run. Thanks for the input.

This seems pretty spot-on for average to me.
Big cities having staffing issues and more expensive
occupancy costs will have higher overhead. Dentists
who own and paid off, or live in smaller towns with
less staffing issues and cheaper occupancy, have
lower overheads-45% to 50%, I'd say.

Our clients are currently tracking with these
metrics:
* Staff costs: 27.5%
* Supplies/lab: 13%
* Merchant fees: 1%
* G&A costs: 8%
* Occupancy: 7.2%
* Associate: Depends a little on production mix,
but 23% is average.
Total overhead of about 80%, so profit of 20%.

Before COVID, I was close to 50% overhead. Now
more like 75%-80%. Staff costs and rent are way up.

Google " EBITDA margin. " This is how businesses
in general are evaluated to see if profit is good.
Take your EBITDA and divide it by revenue. If
the number is more than 20%, then that's a good
healthy business.

have seen the biggest jumps since COVID. Our typical
client used to be 25% or less. It has seemed to
stabilize and it has come back from a high of 28.5%
that we saw. Supplies seem to be getting back in line,
but we saw a jump in 2021-2023 because of inflation.
Hygiene production has been more spotty in
practices, and this is coupled with a boom in their
wages and insurance still reimbursing like they
always have. We have more and more clients getting
out-of-network, and those tend to do about 4%-5%
better on overhead.
