Introduction:
I have played with a new idea to correct CL2s. Initially it was
to just finish those pesky 1-2mm CL2s. I am going to post one of
my first cases that I can remember. It is not ideal but gives you the
idea. This idea costs no money, has no lab fee, and can be used with
any appliance/Rx/slot size. It has many advantages and some disadvantages. I now use it as my sole CL2 corrector. If you don't like it,

please don't use it. I am simply presenting this to2> since it has
you
made my life easier and my treatment better. I only ask that you call
it an HSD. If there is interest I can post many more cases and ideas.
This young lady was about 12.5 years old when we started. I
started with a U2x4 and a headgear. She removed the headgear in
her sleep and basically did not wear it. After additional b/b and
alignment she is still CL2.
The HSD is a sectional technique that allows the posterior
segment to distalize without any cross-arch stabilization. The
archwire is sectioned between the U2-3 so that the distal segments
are free but so is the U2-2. It was inspired by the Carriere Distalizer.
This is two months of CL2 elastic wear. A continuous archwire
was placed to recapture and realign the anterior segment. This

CL2 correction is eight weeks of HSD. Just think how easy it is to
correct a minor CL2 buccal relationship.
Note in the previous photo. I had no overjet to work with. It
took seven more months to finish and I had to lose a bit of CL2
correction. If I had overjet this would have been perfect. As I said,
I have many cases to share but wanted to show how it started.

I really don't want this to be controversial! However, any
comments or questions are welcome. I can assure you that this is
what I do and I have been extremely happy with the results. It is
completely dependent on cooperation. ■

Great info and result!
1. What does HSD stand for?
2. Any issue with the upper cuspids flaring out excessively towards the labial?
3. Have you done it with aligners prior to scan for refinement? ■

Does it stand for Harnick Sectional Distalization? I like the idea of bullying up on groups of
teeth and not trying to move two whole arches at the same time. Good stuff. ■
