I agree that MFT can be hit and miss, but there is no denying that tongue thrust leads to
open bite and deficient development of the maxilla and sinuses. The only way to retrain the
tongue is with the Myobrace or occlusal guard. Go to YouTube and also take in the lecture on
breathing by Dr. Flutter. ■

I'm so confused by your posts. "The only way to retrain the tongue. ..." Are you being serious?
"Go to YouTube. ..." and do what? Watch random sales pitches for Myobrace?
Could you clarify whether you are joking or being serious? Then we would know better how
to respond to you. You have only four posts in total, so it's hard to figure it out. ■

I had a severe open bite case that treated fantastic by telling the patient to eat fried bologna
sandwiches three days a week. I need to make a video on the dramatic effects bologna therapy
for open bites. The chewing of the thin meat creates extra exercise of the tongue and it forgets
how to thrust. ■

Rockeortho trained at SLU and I know there are several instructors there who teach and
believe in myofunctional therapy exercises, so I think he/she does in fact believe in it? ■

Surely you jest? I find it hard to believe that Profit's research on this very topic is not required
reading in every residency. It has been known for over a generation that tongue thrusts do not
cause open bite. In that chicken-or egg-dilemma, there is currently no scientific question.
With regard to burden of proof, the burden of proof is with a new appliance. Myofunctional
therapy has no valid research backing. Its theory is false until proven true. Think about it: If that
were not the case, it would be our job to prove that Emac's bologna sandwiches don't cure open
bites. Good luck with that as, 10 years later, when the good research finally proves it false, Emac
would likely switch to salami sandwiches. Hey, he knows a good thing and has by then retired to
his 50,000-square-foot villa in the islands with his team of servants, off the claims he has made
about his bologna sandwiches.
That, by the way, is what certain publicly traded orthodontic companies do to us poor
believing saps all of the time. We have to get used to understanding that the standard of logical
scientific thinking is that you have to prove the claim to be accepted. The profession does not
first have to prove it wrong. ■
