Below you will find "A," "B" and "C" options for many steps: "A" steps will produce the least
amount of aerosols, "B" steps have the potential for increased aerosols and "C" steps are the traditional
bonding steps with the highest amount of aerosols. Included are three protocols: utilization of traditional
phosphoric acid etchant, self-etching primers, and bonding to a tooth with residual composite.

TRADITIONAL PHOSPHORIC ACID ETCH TECHNIQUE
Option A:
Least aerosols

Option B:
Increased aerosols

1. Prophy

Instruct patients to vigorously
brush their teeth, focusing mainly
on the facial/buccal surfaces, at
home right before departing for
your office.

Upon arrival, instruct
patients to brush their teeth
vigorously with a unidose
oil-free pumice. Patients
should thoroughly rinse their
teeth at least three times.

Prophy the tooth with a
rubber cup and oil-free
pumice at chairside.

2. Dry

Dry tooth thoroughly with a
cotton roll or 2x2.

Dry tooth thoroughly with a
tooth dryer.

Dry tooth thoroughly with
chairside air syringe.

3. Etch

Acid-etch with liquid phosphoric
acid for 30 seconds. Suction acid
from teeth.

4. Rinse

Rinse each tooth for 10 seconds
with a disposable-tip squeeze
bottle filled with water.

5. Dry

Blot teeth dry thoroughly with
cotton roll or 2x2. Note: Be
light-handed and gently press
the cotton roll to the tooth
surface; wiping or scrubbing will
significantly increase enamel rod
fracture; the result is very poor
strength values.

Dry thoroughly with a tooth
dryer.

Dry thoroughly with chairside
air syringe.

6. Prime and dry

Apply one coat of a hydrophilic
bonding agent (e.g., Assure Plus,
OrthoSolo, MIP, etc.) with a bristle
brush, stroke over five times.
With a new, dry brush, stroke over
each tooth surface five times to
evaporate solvent. This dry brush
may be used for four teeth until it
needs to be discarded. Light-cure
tooth for 10 seconds.

Apply one coat of hydrophilic
bonding agent with a bristle
brush; air-dry with a tooth
dryer for 3 seconds per
tooth.

Apply one coat of hydrophilic
bonding agent with a bristle
brush; air-dry with chairside
air syringe.

7. Bracket
placement

Firmly smear adhesive into
bracket base with a spatula, place
on tooth and light-cure.

Option C:
Traditional method

Rinse each tooth for 10 seconds utilizing your chairside
water syringe; press very
lightly on the water button to
reduce water splash.
