Some of these include full-room air purifiers,
UV sterilization, plexiglass boxes, external
evacuation systems and negative-pressure
tents over existing operatories.
Within the area of PPE are protective
pods or cocoons that are designed to enhance
infection control by isolating patients within
a clear barrier during orthodontic procedures
(Fig. 4).
During the early stages of the pandemic
response, multiple variants of such appliances
were circulated in social media, and although
some of us may have been bemused at first,
there is some merit in considering the use of
additional protective measures, especially in
an open-bay setting. In an emerging setting
and with the absence of solid evidence on this
virus's infectivity through dental aerosols, the
CDC has not formally provided guidelines
on the use of any of these novel measures
in an orthodontic setting.
That said, these engineering controls
may further evolve in design to become a
realistic option for some dental settings, in
addition to the use of advanced PPE measures.
Just as we emerged from the HIV/AIDS
pandemic with changes to the way in which
we practice, we should expect that, with the
heightened attention to infection prevention
in dental settings, we will also emerge from
the COVID-19 pandemic with new ways
to keep our patients, teams and ourselves
safe and healthy.

Conclusion
The COVID-19 response is in a state
of flux and dynamically changing. This
article has provided valuable information
that dental health professionals should
be aware of so that they can treat their
patients safely and responsibly. However, it is
important to note that as the situation with
COVID-19 changes, so may the guidelines.
Orthodontic professionals should constantly
update themselves by seeking information
from authorized federal and state agencies
and dental associations. ■
