We use hand scraping on every patient, then polish with handpiece. It can be done. The last
week we worked, we did not use the handpiece and 95% or more of the adhesive was gone. Will
polish next visit. ■

We have several brands, but the one we have the most of is an Ormco adhesive remover with
replaceable tip. ■

I've used them for years for the bulk of adhesive removal, followed by final cleanup with
high-speed. That part can be put off now. It was just more efficient in decreasing my time at the
chair. The assistant could do most of it before I got there. The assistant must be well-trained.
It is easy to damage or even break teeth if they are not held at the right angle, especially lower
incisors. They can remove composite restorations, so I tell them not to use them around these.
That's for the high-speed only. The tips have to be sharp, so the removable ones are best. They
have to be curved to get under the edge of the bonding. The straight ones sold by some companies
are useless. (Oddly, these are the ones you will usually get if you just order adhesive remover from
most supply houses and why many orthos think they don't work.)
Most tooth damage comes from using dull tips. Then the tendency is to angle the cushioned
end over the incisal to get a better purchase and/or use too much force. I have used these less and
less because they don't work as well with some of the newer adhesives. But for right now, they
may be our best option. The patient will have to wait to get the final polish. ■

I concur with "fesdds." We use the hand scrapers with replaceable tips for 90% of our removal
work. We use Reliance adhesives and when you get that blade in the right spot, the adhesive just
pops. All my shirts are custom made since my right forearm is twice as big as the left. ■

Just to clarify, there are parts of the virus that mutate but others that are more stable. The
third-generation tests and beyond analyze multiple proteins on the virus envelope, including the
less variable portions. Practical testing will still be possible, even if there are numerous variants
of the virus. Keep in mind that biochem/immunology was a long time ago for me, but this is
what I have learned over the last week or two. ■
