What have been the business benefits?
Jergensen: Efficiency leads to cost savings. Our schedule
has opened up, which means we are able to spend more time
training and being with patients to educate them. Happy doctor,
happy staff!
Limbaugh: It allows my practice to continue to grow because
my start appointments take half as long to complete, opening
up my schedule for more starts. Another way it opens the
schedule is down the road when I don't have to do as many
bracket adjustments.

What is the cost/benefit trade-off?
Waddoups: Lab cost is much less than my chair-time overhead.

how did you decide to have

Jergensen: We felt it was the most cost-effective way with the
least amount of failure. Our experience has been perfect!
Waddoups: I have my own 3D printers, but the turnaround time
at OrthoSelect is really quick. I ran the numbers, and it was more
cost-effective and efficient to have OrthoSelect print them.
Dr. Limbaugh, you do your own
3D printing. How did you decide
to do that, and what has been
your experience?
Limbaugh: I wanted the ability for a very flexible schedule, so
printing the indirect bonding trays allows me to schedule as
quickly as I need to. The scariest part was worrying if we could
handle the software, but the training we received was great.

Are you tracking direct-bonded cases
vs. those you do with Dibs AI?
Jergensen: We see that our schedule has lightened, patients are
in the chair for less time, and I have more free time-a lot more!
Waddoups: I'm tracking bond failure and repositioning. As I
mentioned earlier, bond failure has been similar-and perhaps
slightly better if you include the hassle of bonding 7s. I've had a
few repos, but very few. Dibs AI is beating my hand-positioned
repositions stats so far!
What advice would you give
to your colleagues who still rely
on direct bonding?
Waddoups: Give it a try to see if it makes sense for your practice.
My staff loves it, and I love being more efficient. My chair time at
a bonding appointment is now to stop by, give them a high-five
and check out how cool they look with braces. It does require
a small amount of time in front of the computer outside of their
visit, so you'll want to consider that as well.
Jergensen: Bite the bullet and make the change! Trust the
