there has to be at least 40 patients for that four-hour time slot. If I have fewer than 40 patients,
I simply cut down days and tell my part-time employees to stay home.
These part-time employees also work at other ortho offi ces; therefore, cutting their hours
does not create a big problem for their families. Since I can regulate the number of staff for each
clinic day, I don't have to deal with the overstaff problem. ■

I must be doing something wrong if $200k sets the tone. I would need to drop two people
as well to fi t that in. I think that using that metric helps to see if you need to have more staff.
But one still needs to check the 18%-22% of collections on salaries. At $200k that would drop
employee overhead to 15% for me, maybe less.
I like being overstaffed slightly. Makes it easier to take off more time with my family, and
then crunch patients in when needed. Minimizes waiting and upsetting parents. One thing I
see in bad Google reviews is how long folks wait. This almost is more important than treatment
results, in their minds! I know when I'm understaffed, my waiting room is packed, kids wait,
repos and things get procrastinated on. I would think $150k-$175k would be easier. ■

It is actually $250,000 per F/T employee. I have been running this way for four years now.
I have been practicing for 15 years and once had nine staff members.
I would not start letting staff go if you are over, but do not replace staff when they leave or
are fi red. You will be amazed how the practice can handle it. ■

in the afternoon!

employee. ... I think that makes us
1 : $394,000. Holy cow, no wonder my employees hate me!
No, seriously, I know that I am a little understaffed.
However, when I put out a Craigslist ad and we interviewed
people, my staff didn't want any of the applicants; they
said they would rather work harder than deal with another
person who may not fi t into our small group. (We are an
all-woman practice.) I consider my employees my friends;
I pay for their lunch most days, I don't make them clock
out for lunch, they get whatever days they want off (within
reason). One of them wanted to take off for Bike Week in
Daytona this year, so we are closing for the week. They
think adding someone may change the dynamics of the
practice. They would rather have some added perks and
work a little harder.
With systems in place, you can run a tighter ship. ■
