TV in the Waiting Room
Townies talk about the tube and why (or why not) to have them in the offi ce
Please help me resolve a question: What do you put on the reception room TV? I thought
something like CNN would be interesting for the parents, but my partner thinks Disney or
cartoons would be interesting for the siblings. Can't fi gure out to whom should we direct the
program. A previous question about morphing might be interesting, but I would rather not use
a looped program in the waiting room. ■

This is one reason I do not have a TV in the offi ce. I'll never forget being stuck in the waiting
room at a car dealership, waiting for my car to be looked at, and being subjected to Jerry Springer
for an hour.
Another reason not to have one is that it is distracting to the front desk staff. Do you want
them watching it? Exactly what is a good reason to have one? ■
I currently have a TV in the waiting room. Luckily, I am moving to a new location in a few

months and will not be having a TV in the new offi ce waiting area. This is a constant source of
annoyance. A lot of families bring in young siblings and even the news can be inappropriate, so
we now leave it on PBS, but I know this can be frustrating to a lot of the parents. I just feel it is
safer. There were times when we had the news on, the front desk was not paying attention and I
noticed that the news had changed over to a soap opera or Jerry Springer.
In my new offi ce, I have a separate game area that will have Disney movies playing that will
also play in the TVs above the clinical chairs. The rest of the waiting area will have some easy
listening music and magazines, no TV. ■

I have a TV in the kids' area that plays G-rated movies. In the reception area, I have a monitor
hooked up to play a PowerPoint of staff photos, welcome to new patients (fi rst name and last initial),
announcements about contests, photos of patients who've just been debanded, etc. (no sound). ■

I'm not a big fan of TV in the waiting room. It generates noise and there are very few shows
that will make everyone happy.
My waiting room is small, but if I ever get a bigger space, I like the idea of having computer
areas. As for the gaming set-ups, our pediatric dentist has three screens on the wall for gaming,
and I think kids respond well to that. ■
