I work today, Sunday, from 8 a.m. to noon. According to my offi ce manager, there were eight
patients waiting outside when she came at 7:40 a.m. to get things ready. When I walked in at
7:55 a.m., all the seven chairs and the waiting room were fi lled with patients. We saw 91 patients.
We had 11 no-shows/cancellations. We debanded four cases and started three new cases. One
of the starts was my referring GP's son. This GP had to bring her son in today because she also
works on Saturdays. With nine staff members (one sterilizer, one DA, six chairside RDAs, one
offi ce manager who works as a front desk) we fi nished our last group of patients at 11:30 a.m.
By 11:40 a.m. I was already at the freeway entrance going home to see my kids. Life is beautiful.
Working on the weekends is the only way for me to fi nd a lot of part-time chairside assistants
to help me. These assistants have full-time jobs at other offi ces and they want to earn additional
income by working for me on the weekends. With the capacity to see a high volume of patients
during the weekends, I don't have to work too many days at my offi ces during the weekdays.
That's how I have a lot of free days to work for corporate chains to supplement my income. ■

This will sound a bit different, but consider the source! I have been practicing for 38 years,
am 64+ years old and have worked on Saturdays, doing something to make money, since I was
14. Even during college, dental school and ortho residency. I changed to two Saturdays a month
about 18 years ago with no regrets. Saturday is a day of the week.
Lots of people need to come to the orthodontist on their day off, so I accommodate them. Lots
come to me only because I have Saturday hours. I successfully managed to have a great family life
and while my kids complained on occasion, we took great vacations each year, have a weekend
home and they were both able to attend private universities with huge tuitions. Lots of competition
in my downtown location and, not surprisingly, every orthodontist that I know seems to work
at least two Saturdays a month. Working on a Saturday is not a bad thing to consider at all! ■

We did a patient survey and everyone who requested Saturday hours also requested evening
hours. So we decided to open one day a week for " evening hours, " which ends up being one to
one-and-a-half hours later than our normal days. Evening hours available seems to satisfy those
who can't make a normal work hours appointment. And Saturdays remain free. ■
