Staff Threatening To Leave
Two quarrelsome employees send this Townie to the boards to ask for advice on how to proceed

I'm sure this has been posted and dealt with many times before. I have a staff member-we'll
call her Sophie-threatening to go to another offi ce unless she gets a raise. She is a good, hard
worker and I don't want her to go. The only reason she started looking for another job is that she
absolutely does not get along with one of the other staff members-let's call her Adrian. Most
of the staff does not get along well with Adrian either, but she's a hard worker. Eventually, just
because of the offi ce dynamics, Adrian will have to go, but between now and then, what should
I do about Sophie? Do you ever give in to staff demands? I feel it could lead to a slippery slope
where every time they aren't happy, they threaten to leave. ■

How did Sophie react when she spoke to Adrian about what was bothering her? Let me
guess- she didn't, and came to you with an ultimatum. Put them in a room and see if they can
work it out. If that doesn't work, go in and talk to them, then give them fi ve minutes to work it
out. If Sophie deserves a raise, give it to her. How much effort do you put into team building? ■

" Hard worker " means nothing if they disrupt your offi ce. Let me guess: Adrian has excellent
clinical skills. Who cares? She needs to be gone.
I hate being held hostage for raises: It never works out long term, so I usually just let them

There have been quite a few discussions over several months between the two of them and

including myself as well. We do lunches as a team fairly often but haven't had the chance to do
other team-building-type activities; someone always can't make it or cancels last minute. Sophie
is paid decently, but I am not the highest-paying doc in my area, that I know of. She does work
hard, so giving her a raise wouldn't be bad, but I am afraid of giving them the opportunity to
come and give me ultimatums in the future, expecting me to give in. ■

If Adrian is going to leave anyway and she is a bad apple, better get rid of her now. Then tell
Sophie that the reason for her wanting to leave is gone, as is the necessity for the raise. If she still
balks and still wants the raise, let her go-she is not loyal and you don't want to constantly worry
that she's scouring the classifi ed ads behind your back. Better yet, give her the raise and do your
own classifi ed ad, then give her the boot! ■

Most of the staff doesn't get along with Adrian. Let her go immediately. Keep Sophie, give
her a raise. Sophie's happy, you're happy, the rest of the staff is happy.
It always seems so simple when it's not my own offi ce! ■
