I offer $13 to starting employees with no dental experience and train them. I have two weeks
of paid vacation time, a 401(k) plan and a profi t-sharing plan. I offer very generous bonuses
throughout the year every month (last year, each employee made $225 a month) and a good
Christmas bonus (I paid $3,000 minimum per employee). My highest-paid employee made
$55,000 last year and the lowest-paid employee made $29,000. ■

I too offer 401(k) with a match up to 4% and possible profi t-sharing at the end of the year.
I don't do monthly bonuses but my staff is salary and we work three days a week. Their pay is
above the national hourly average. From what I gather, nationally it is $16+ an hour? They have
10 days of vacation a year and it's use it or lose it. So you can say it's paid vacation but includes
sick time. I probably overpay, but I am looking for good assistants with low turnover. ■

Although it depends on location and market factors that I don't know of in your situation,
I hate to say it, but you may be too generous. Then again, this may be what your market requires
to sustain quality employees. ■

I offer three sick days and no-pay vacation time on top of what I put in there above. I see
patients 3½ days a week now but I pay the staff to sit around the other half-day so phones can
be answered. Charlestonbraces, I may be [too generous] but like Justinudm is saying, even
though I am overpaying a little, I want to retain the good
ones. Having said that, I am more concerned about the
complaining and moaning that goes on, along with the
negative attitudes and the feeling of being manipulated.
I am looking for advice-as well as to vent here, I guess. ■

you is to just get rid of the problem
employee. She is likely a cancer
and will make the working environment more stressed,
not to mention spreading a bad attitude. I had a similar
employee and she was with me 1½ years before I fi nally
said " enough. " It was the best thing I have ever done for
my offi ce. All of the fi ghting and backstabbing stopped
when I fi red her. It's not easy to fi re someone for the fi rst
time but when it's needed, you gotta do it for the sake of
the business. ■
