Sterilization for Startup
A Townie asks peers which sterilizer makes the most sense for a brand-new offi ce

New grad here, opening a startup in a few months. Looking for some advice on sterilization.
Henry Schein is suggesting I get a Midmark M11, but I've seen there's also a smaller M9 that is
cheaper but has less capacity. Initially as a startup, I won't need huge capacity, but is it worth it
to just get the larger one for future expansion?
Trying to be conservative with costs in the beginning, but don't want to save $1,000 now to

spend $5,000 a year from now. Any thoughts would be appreciated! ■
I use dry heat for all my pliers and a Statim 5000 for handpieces and other stuff. Years ago,

I bought a used Dentronix DDS 5000 and it has been very reliable. In my other offi ce I use a
Sterident dry heat " oven. " It is cheap and slow, but very simple and works. Keep it simple! ■

I have owned only M11s. Take care of it and will last a long time. We have two in our offi ce. ■
The only problem with the Dentronix idea is that Dentronix no longer exists. You can't buy
new; you could buy used, but they can't be repaired if something fails (usually the control board).
The dry heat replacement is a CPAC RH-Pro11. ■

Hope mine continues to work-fi ngers crossed. I have had it for at least 10 years. A relative
went to an estate sale and part of the estate was an ortho offi ce that had closed. No one else
wanted any of the stuff. I think I paid less than $2k for boxes of stuff plus the sterilizer. I got
lucky on that one.
The point I was trying to make was that an ortho offi ce really needs dry heat for pliers. A
simple Sterident oven is cheap and effective. Just slow. I would invest in pliers over a fancy dry
heat system if I was starting out. More instruments means less sterilization time. Sterilize over
lunch and at the end of the day. ■

Yeah, we loved our Dentronix! When it started to fail a few weeks ago, we tried to contact
the company-that's when we discovered they were bought and the entire line was discontinued.
The CPAC works great and is fast, but there's no cool-down cycle (so we open the door and
leave it to cool).

P.S. I kept the Dentronix; if anyone knows a source for repairs or parts, let me know. ■
