If you really want this job, negotiate a longer out clause so he has a better potential to replace
you. As was already noted, once you tell him you want out, he'll start looking, and as soon as
he fi nds someone, he'll let you go sooner than the longer time period specifi ed in the contract.
But if he can't, at least you'll be able to get out without accumulating more frequent fl yer miles.
IME, these types of contracts stem from practices that are out in the boonies, in places that
not a lot of people want to relocate to, or the practice environment is such that working conditions
create a revolving door for orthodontic associates. Be careful. ■

Dr. Jerrold, I am honored you would weigh in here! I will try to address of few of your points.
The practice is in the most populous region of South Carolina. I would be starting the ortho
portion from scratch. Of all the one-sided agreements that have been handed to me, this one
takes the cake. I can usually rewrite these boilerplates to my satisfaction in an hour or two. It has
taken me more than 10 hours of revisions to get it where it needs to be.
Because I am not in need of the position but it would be nice to use it to apply fully to
