As our group has progressed, the context of work
and time spent together started to change. Initially,
gatherings were just the standard nuts and bolts
informational meetings with little conversation.
However, as time passed, the meetings evolved. Various
school-wide initiatives were cultivated with this group,
including:
* Defining what it means to be a Warrior (our school
mascot).
* Supporting other student groups in our school.
* Participating in quick writes pertaining to our
1Warrior culture.
* Celebrating each other (we start every meeting with
this initiative).
* Creating clear academic guidelines.
* Developing roundtable discussion groups or minibreakout
sessions.
The future of our work together remains to be seen,
but we have proposed studying literature relating to
our craft, making site visits to other organizations, and
constantly reflecting on our own improvement. We feel
like we now have a structure to tackle most challenges
within our school and create a positive outcome. The
best part is we do it together.
When we first created this group, there was a mixed
reception. But it's important to know that even if you
have few attendees, the information is important to
someone, so stick with it. There's a lot of truth to the
saying, " If you build it, they will come. " We built a
structure for everyone in our department to have a voice
and, sure enough, everyone showed up and made their
voice heard.
We end every Coaches Corner with a challenge
pertaining to character or culture development. So, I
leave you with a challenge to you and your organization:
Find a group of committed people, start your own
Coaches Corner, and work to build the intentional
culture you desire.
