field and with athletes receiving a chance to play in
college. We use social networks to celebrate every
school that comes to our building to recruit, and we also
use them to share news of every kid that commits to play
in college. If you do not do this, athletes may not see the
benefit in sticking it out for all four years. You would
be amazed by the reaction we have had from these
efforts. Year one, we only had 28 schools. Last year, we
had close to 200 visits. It matters, and kids react to it.
Winning also gets athletes interested in your program,
and the last few years have been great for us.
The final piece is that you need a staff that values
every kid on the roster - from No. 1 all the way down
to No. 70. This may sound simple for some coaches, but
our staff tries to show it in a concrete way.
Every week, on our varsity team, we give out four
captains: one for offense, one for defense, one for WIN
team (scout team offense) and one for WIN team D
(scout team defense). This shows kids that being on the
WIN (scout team) is important, and we recognize their
contributions. We call home and email about every kid
that misses practices if we don't know about it. You
might ask, " Don't all coaches do that? " That's certainly
not the case, and when coaches only recognize the
starters who miss practice, it sends the wrong message
to the other athletes.
Overall, the relationship you have with your athletes is
" When I hire coaches to my staff, I want
leaders who understand all the little things
that must be accomplished. I'm not as
concerned about the Xs and Os. "
what keeps them out, and that's the only way to get your
numbers up and keep them up. If things don't work, you
must admit that it's time to change your approach. What
we do from one year to the next might look very different.
When I hire coaches to my staff, I want leaders who
understand all the little things that must be accomplished.
I'm not as concerned about the Xs and Os. I'm much
more interested in guys who want to make those phone
calls home than I am with coaches who boast about the
offensive or defensive records they've broken.
Coaches can learn the Xs and Os, but they either want
to do the small things that make a program successful
or they don't. It's really that simple.
Nate Eimer is the head football coach at West Aurora
High School in Illinois. He's also a recipient of Coach &
Athletic Director's 40 Under 40 award, a program honoring
the next generation of leaders in the sports industry.
