and four CFOs while this project
was going on, so there was a lot of
administrative upheaval. "
Capital projects can take a toll on
athletic administrators, especially
when they're forced to absorb
additional responsibilities, but that
can be the nature of the job. Williams
said it's no different than the
challenges coaches face when players
suffer injuries. " We can't just put
up our hands and
say we can't play anymore, " he said.
" We need to figure it out. "
The Wittenberg project
encountered many obstacles,
but none completely unfamiliar
to athletic directors who have
been down this road before.
Administrators must manage the
demands of various stakeholders,
and keep construction on time
and on budget. They also must
brainstorm ways to deal with a lack
of facilities and practice space until
the project reaches its completion.
Williams said Wittenberg
athletics managed to
operate at a high level despite the
obstacles. Athletic staff was spread
out all over campus. Student-athletes
used makeshift locker rooms,
practice areas and training facilities.
Morale was down, and Williams said
it wasn't something the program had
anticipated.
" Student-athlete satisfaction was
down, our competitiveness was
down, and coaches were struggling
with a lot of off-the-field problems, "
he said.
" I think we underestimated the
amount of emotional support we
probably needed to give our studentathletes
and our coaches during the
difficult time. After the first couple
