.Utilize coaches meetings. Continue to use your
preseason coaches meetings, coach handbooks,
memos and other established methods to communicate
with your staff. Whenever you detect an issue that hasn't
been covered, add it to the discussion. Periodically revise
your agenda and materials to stay current on what's
happening.
.Provide examples of the good, bad and ugly. Use
email to share links to timely articles that help
promote sportsmanship, explain how to provide better
supervision, and illustrate the value and principles of
education-based athletics. It also makes sense to provide
examples of missteps to reinforce the idea of what's
unacceptable in your program.
This medium can be used to provide a simple " thought
of the day, " in which you highlight one aspect, issue
or principle. You can cover a lot of ground with simple
messages and reminders.

.Offer counseling to coaches. Sit down and provide
one-on-one counseling for anyone who does
something that is not in-line with the school's values and
mission. These sessions can deal with misguided words
or actions, but clear explanations and expectations need
to be given to the coach.
.Share helpful resources. Provide learning
opportunities and prescriptions for improvement
to any coach who needs to change their approach. You
can use the NFHS online coach education courses,
links to articles, community college courses, clinics,
books, webinars or anything else that helps meet your
objectives. Make sure to be specific and clearly articulate
what steps must be taken.

.Remove toxic coaches. Consider replacing coaches
who are unwilling to change and improve. This
step should not be taken lightly and only after you have
exhausted every possible effort to guide the coach. For
the benefit of your student-athletes, and to maintain the
values of your program, this may be a necessary step
with an individual who doesn't understand their role in
the education-based system.
Taking into account that you may have a staff of 50 to
100 coaches, it might not be uncommon to have an issue
that needs attention. The more proactive you are with
your coaches, the more successful you'll be in heading off
potential problems and providing the best environment
for your student-athletes.
