schools. When interacting with the media, they need
to promote a positive image to the athletes, program
and school. Great care must be given to their choice of
words, tone and message.

Athletic directors may want to include the National
Standards for Sport Coaches. Also include anything
pertinent to your particular setting. The goal of
this session is to give community coaches a complete
overview of what's involved and expected.

.Create informational handouts. Consider putting
.together a brochure or trifold titled " Coaching in
Education-Based Athletics. " Present a brief compilation of
the major items covered in the workshop, and highlight the
expectations of coaches involved in
education-based athletics.
This brochure can be mailed
to anyone who could not attend
the workshop. It also can be
distributed at other school and
community meetings where you
may find potential candidates.
Athletic directors should also
post the handout on school
websites. Regardless of the method
of distribution, this handout
represents a great effort to explain
what you're looking for in coaches.

.Promote certifications.
.While all coaches benefit
by completing the NFHS coach
education courses, these offerings
are vital for community coaches.
Inform these individuals that this
program exists, and tell them that
completing the courses greatly
enhance their understanding of
education-based athletics.
Athletic directors should again
remind community coaches that
vacancy preference will be given
to candidates who have earned
their relevant certification and
accreditations.

.Invite prospective candidates
.to observe coaches. Encourage
interested community-level coaches
to contact you and schedule an
opportunity to observe some of
your high school practice sessions.
These individuals will see skill
instruction, but the real intent is to
introduce the overall organization
of a practice session, how a
coach uses teachable moments,
communication techniques, and
the use of acceptable motivational

work, you need to hand pick varsity coaches who plan and
conduct solid, organized practice sessions and serve as
good role models within your philosophy.
By utilizing these four strategies, you may be able to
help community coaches better understand the role and
expectations of high school coaches. With this effort,
you should also be able to expand your pool of qualified
candidates.
