if the district does not invest in the safety of the equipment.
The reconditioner will clean the helmets; check all helmets
and shoulder pads for parts, cracks and durability; and
reject them if the equipment is deemed unsafe.
Other tasks include:
* Inspecting and repairing all jerseys, pants and girdles
(game and practice).
* Inspecting and washing knee pads.
* Taking inventory of all hard and soft goods, and noting
possible new purchase needs.
January/February
Develop a wish list of purchases with the head coach.
Know that a high school has limited money for capital
expenses on budget spending. Fundraising at our school
brings in just enough for the non-budget items.
Remember to check the purchase dates of helmets,
and plan a purchase rotation number so the program
doesn't get killed in one year by spending thousands
on new helmets. Shoulder pads can run more than $200
each.
Check your soft goods for replacement, including
knee pads, girdles, practice pants, belts and practice
jerseys. The coach may want to purchase new game
jerseys or pants that can run $6,000 per set depending
on the roster size. At Deerfield High School, we only
let the seniors purchase their own jerseys, so there can
be a replacement cost.
Other capital expenses include:
* Various field gear that coaches use in practice.
* Communication systems and video gear that
accompany subscriptions to groups like Hudl.
March/April
There are deadlines for ordering uniforms and
equipment if you want to receive them on time. Summer
camps start in June, and the season begins in August.
Game uniforms need to be ordered by April 1. To
receive most items on time for summer camps, it has
been my experience that this is the best deadline to set.
Keep in mind that you want everything to arrive in time
for the team picture day in August.
Late May/June
Receive camp gear and stock your containers for
day one distribution, and schedule fitting sessions
with the players. I need 25 minutes per athlete to do
this properly. If you do not have a qualified equipment
manager, an athletic trainer educated in proper fitting
techniques can help. Your helmet and shoulder pad
representative also can assist.
Make sure a kit is available for helmet parts and pads.
