eferee shortages, the safety of players, staff, and
personnel, and social media issues are just a few
of the hot-button issues highlighted in our sixth
annual Coaches Report.
In 2018, Coach & Athletic Director began surveying
high school coaches to gather feedback on some of the
significant issues in the profession across the country.
The results help us better understand the challenges
faced by coaches, and they guide us in providing relevant
content to confront those issues head-on.
The 2023 Coaches Report examined the ripple
effects of the NCAA's transfer portal what that means
for recruitment at the high school level, what to look
for when hiring assistants, advice on how to build team
chemistry, and the ongoing referee shortage. We also
asked coaches about the support from their athletic
administration and what concerns coaches the most
in 2023.

coaches to tell us what issues weigh on their minds.
Here's what concerned them the most, ranked by
the percentage of coaches who said they were at
least moderately concerned by the subject.

As part of our annual study, we also asked coaches
to rank what they believe are the most significant
challenges currently facing them. After being
dethroned from the top spot for the first time in a
five-year span in 2022, sports specialization returned
as coaches' biggest concern garnering 95.5% of the
audience response. Last year's most concerning issue
- player social media use - fell down to the eight
h-most concerning issue among coaches in
2023 (77.3%).

Effects of College Transfer Portal
The rise of the NCAA transfer portal has given
athletes more agency over their athletic decisions. But
the amount of transfer portal athletes can mean fewer
