roster spots for high school graduates or JUCO/smallcollege
players.
We asked coaches about their thoughts on the
sudden rise of the college transfer portal and its effects
on high school athletics.
" It has to stop, or be controlled, Thousands of players
are in the portal, only 1000 or 2000 scholarships are
available, " one coach said.
Another added, " It is squeezing the high school
athlete's options and it will be crucial for HS players
to develop their game, be willing to play at a JUCO or
lower level 4-year program (NAIA, D3, etc.) "
" The portal is bad for football and student-athletes. It
enables the athlete to jump to different schools without
any wait time, " an anonymous coach said. " Some
players will go to the portal to change schools rather
than work harder to become a starter at the school they
are at. It also allows coaches to recruit stars from other
teams. Also, it means that they don't have to bring ln
high school or JUCO players to replace the students
who graduated or left for other reasons. "
Another said, " I don't mind the portal but I believe
there should be more stringent guidelines such as a
maximum of 1 transfer. "
Quality of Care
Nearly 57 percent of coaches say they have a fulltime
athletic trainer within the athletic department.
Another 34 percent say they have a part-time
athletic trainer contracted from an outside provider
and nine percent say they do not have access to an
athletic trainer.

" With the changes in AT certifications combined
with Covid-19, there is a shortage of ATs so filling
our position with a consistent AT has proven difficult
so game coverage is all we can currently get. "
" If our ATs actually show up to events then they
are very good. "
