Clinician Q & A:
CHRISTIE COHOON
A look at innovative modalities through
the eyes of a physical therapist
Christie Cohoon is the
program coordinator and
director of clinical education
for St. Louis Community
College physical therapy
assistant program. Cohoon
instructs in multiple subject
areas, including orthopedics,
neurology, pathology and
physical agents. She's been an
instructor in physical agents
for over 20 years, and received her board
certification in orthopedics in 2014. In addition, she
continues to do clinical practice in an outpatient
orthopedic clinic. She also serves as the American
Physical Therapy Association Eastern District chair.
In both her roles as a teacher and a practicing
clinician, Cohoon has experience with various types
of technology for therapeutic rehabilitation. We sat
down with her to hear what she has to say about
innovative modalities.
What are some promising innovative modalities
you've encountered in therapeutic rehabilitation?
I have been practicing for over 24 years, and I
continue to be amazed at the different possibilities
and opportunities that physical agents offer.
Infrared has been improved greatly in the delivery
method, making it more user-friendly for patients in
their own homes. Theradot Dep Cscillation Therapy
has combined amazing technology with the

utilization of physical touch, which is so healing
for our patients. Chronic pain, edema cannot be
managed in a much better way, while still employing
the knowledge and expertise of the clinician
utilizing manual skills.
How do you use these technologies to treat
injuries, and how do you use these modalities to
enhance recovery after games or practices?
I use these technologies to treat injuries and
enhance recovery in many ways. I believe many
of our modalities can assist in managing the
inflammatory process to help prevent chronic
inflammation. Many of our modalities can be used
to jumpstart the healing process with more chronic
conditions. Electrical stimulation allows us to
facilitate neuromuscular training and reeducation to
accelerate the training and retraining of individuals
with various conditions.
What are the key modalities that you have found
effective in injury management and as part of the
recovery program?
Injury management and recovery offer many
opportunities to integrate physical agents into the
rehab process. Early on, typical cryotherapy
management can help with pain and edema
reduction while working on early mobility training.
I have used infrared to facilitate blood flow and the
healing process in various situations. In my practice,
this has been more for chronic conditions, though I
