the annual Toys for Tots toy drive and
collected over 800 toys for distribution
to local children as part of their
annual holiday tradition.
US apple holdings
down from average
U.S. fresh apple holdings in
January were down compared to
a year ago, as well as compared to
the five-year average, according to
the U.S. Apple Association.
USApple conducted a survey of
storage facilities, said Regulatory
and Industry Affairs Director Mark
W. Seetin.
" According to the survey, this
year's fresh apple holdings on Jan.
1, 2019, totaled 91.8 million
bushels, 16 percent less than the
inventories reported for Jan. 1
of last year, " Seetin reported.
" Processing holdings totaled 34.5
million bushels, 18 percent less
Full 2017 stats set
for California crop
The California Agricultural Statistics
Review for crop year 2017 has been
released. It reports that California's

was 126.3 million bushels, 16 percent
less than last January's total

California's agricultural abundance
includes more than 400 commodities.
Over a third of the country's
vegetables and two-thirds of the
country's fruits and nuts are grown

US state for cash farm receipts,
accounting for over 13 percent of the
nation's total agricultural value. The
top producing commodities for 2017
included grapes at $5.70 billion and
strawberries at $3.10 billion.
California agricultural
exports totaled $20.56 billion for
2017. Top commodities for export
in 2017 included almonds, dairy
and dairy products, pistachios,
wine and walnuts. Export statistics
are produced by the University
of California, Davis, Agricultural
Issues Center.
Food safety funds
awarded in Michigan
Ensuring the safety of the state's
food supply is paramount to
protecting public health as well as
helping to grow Michigan's $104.7
billion food and agriculture
economy.
" As part of the department's
commitment to food safety, we
have provided seven grants for food
safety education and training, " said
Tim Slawinski, director of the Food
and Dairy Division of the Michigan
Department of Agriculture and
Rural Development. " This grant
program puts funds into the hands of
those who have direct contact with
restaurant and retail grocery store
workers who handle food; and with
consumers, to assure a well-trained
workforce and informed public. "
Among the grant award recipients
was the Michigan Farmers Market
Association, which received $45,167
for statewide consumer food safety
education outreach.
