Engelsma's Apple Barn wins Michigan cider contest

Engelsma's Apple Barn of Walker,
Michigan, won first place at the
Michigan Apple Cider Contest, marking
its sixth win in the competition in the
annual event's 23 years.
The competition took place at the
Great Lakes Fruit, Vegetable & Farm
Market EXPO on Dec. 11. Winners
were announced by Bob Tritten,
district fruit educator with Michigan
State University Extension, and
founder of the contest, at a banquet
later in the day.
The Engelsma family has grown
apples in Walker for four generations
- since the 1920s, according to the
Apple Barn website.

sold at seven different farm markets
in west Michigan.
Trittten credited both Jim Engelsma
and his daughter, cider maker Bridget
Engelsma, with the win.

Calling Jim Engelsma a " master
cider maker, " Tritten remarked on
the number of wins and runner-up
finishes the Engelsmas had racked up
over the years.
" He's got a number of a second or
third places, " Tritten said, in addition
to the six wins.
The contest this year drew 24
participants from across the state. Nine
individual judges rated the beverages.
