At the banquet, MSHS President Will
Bristol referred to Oxley as a leader,
unselfish with his industry knowhow
and mentor to other grape growers.
" This is greatly appreciated, " Oxley
said at the banquet. " It's not something
I ever worked for. I just tried to do what
was right for the industry through the
years and give input and help out when
I could. "
Larry Gut
In a video recording played at the
banquet, Gut said that he became
excited about integrated pest
management as a young man, when
friends were joining environmental
causes. He read books about pest
control and realized there were
opportunities to try different methods.
A native of Southern California,
he earned a doctorate degree in
Entomology from Oregon State
University (OSU) in 1985. He was
mentored by OSU's Peter Westigard,
" who taught him that working closely
with growers through on-farm research
projects was the best way to inspire
change, " according to MSHS. Larry met
and married Kathleen, in 1991 - today,
they have four adult children.

Gut came to MSU in 1997. He said
that Jim Koen of Almar Orchards, an
organic grower in Flushing, Michigan,
was one of his earliest collaborators.
" My main thrust of my research
then, and passion, was mating
disruption - using sex pheromones
to manage insects - and this was the
perfect place to do it, " he said.
" Gut's program has contributed to
a foundation that has allowed the tree
fruit industries in the state, as well
as nationally and internationally, to
respond to changes in the availability
and efficacy of insecticides in a
proactive manner, " according to MSHS.
" His team of students and collaborators
have developed novel insights into
how moths communicate using sex
pheromones, then used this knowledge
to design more effective, economical
and environmentally friendly strategies
to protect Michigan's tree fruit
industries. "
Gut died Sept. 6 after battling cancer.
Kathleen accepted the award on his
behalf at the banquet.
" Integrated pest management, when
Larry started it, was something really
kind of esoteric, " she said. " He loved
growers and he loved doing on-farm
research - he had that model for
himself, the model of going to the
growers and showing them that respect
to work with them closely. " FGN
