which impacts site temperature.
Figure 2 shows weighted sums for soil,
topographic / land cover, and climate
(for both red and white varietals)
variables. Higher values are indicative
of higher suitability for that variable
and vice versa. Final suitability maps,
combining all data, were developed
with five classes depicting levels of
suitability: (1) low: 0-176, (2) mediumlow:
177-352, (3) medium: 353-528, (4)
medium-high: 529-704 and (5) high:
705-880.
A total of 1.74 million hectares
of land was potentially suitable for
cultivation, more than 75% of which
was classified in the medium-high
suitability class. This means that, in
these areas, based on soil, climate,
topography and land cover variables,
cultivation would do well, but slightly
less than optimal compared to the
highest class of suitability. This
highlights regions that cultivation can
be expanded to beyond the traditional
growing areas.
Counties with highest total area were
Sanilac, Allegan and St. Clair with over
190,000, 150,000 and 130,000 hectares
of potentially suitable land, respectively

(Figures 3 and 4). Generally,
southwestern counties had higher
potential suitability whereas northern
and northeastern counties indicated
relatively lower suitability. Differences
also existed in land suitability between
red and white varietals. Southwestern
counties were especially more suitable
for red varietals. There was also more
land in the high suitability class (about
10,000 hectares, mostly in Allegan,
Berrien and Van Buren) and medium
class (about 70,000 hectares) for red
compared to white vinifera varietals.
On the other hand, there was more
than 80,000 hectares of land in the
medium-high suitability class for white
compared to red varietals, mostly found
in Sanilac, Allegan, St. Clair and Huron
counties (Figures 3 and 4). Figure 5
highlights the mean land suitability
scores by white and red varietals across
the study area counties.
