A NEW SOLUTION
for Powdery Mildew
Powdery mildew is one of the age-old diseases battled by all
ornamental and vegetable growers. It is one of the easier to
identify diseases for growers with its white-gray powder-like
appearance on the upper leaf surface. While it is seldomly
devastating to the crop, powdery mildew is an aesthetic eye
sore to customers. The disease is caused by several species
of fungal pathogens, each infecting one or more crops but
all causing similar symptoms. Powdery mildew is one of the
most common and widespread disease in greenhouse crops.
Preventing powdery mildew can be a challenge for
greenhouse growers. High relative humidity, low air
movement and tight spacing all favor disease development.
While increasing air movement can help reduce relative
humidity in and around the plant canopy, powdery mildew
spores are easily distributed by air currents, from plant
to plant. Cultural practices alone are often not enough to
prevent damage by powdery mildew diseases.
When conditions are favorable for disease, timely application
of fungicides is one way to prevent damage by powdery
mildew. One of the key aspects that needs to be considered
when developing a sound fungicide application program is
rotating MOAs or FRAC groups. There are many products
labeled for control of powdery mildew diseases but, not as
many unique and effective MOAs. Many of the products
contain an active ingredient from FRAC groups 3 or 11.
Seido, with the active ingredient pyriofenone, belongs
to FRAC group 50 and is the only product in that group
labeled for ornamental use. A unique MOA powdery mildew
fungicide had not been introduced in many years until Seido
Fungicide was launched in the summer of 2021.
Solidago Trial
Not only is Seido an excellent resistance management
tool, but it also checks three of the most important boxes
for growers, efficacious against target disease(s), nonphytotoxic,
and 4-hour REI. Seido provides both preventative
and early-curative control. Though it is best to manage
powdery mildew preventatively, in the case of an unexpected
outbreak, Seido can help get the disease under control.
Regardless of stage of growth (including open blooms) Seido
can be confidently applied to any ornamental crop.

There are many characteristics of pesticides growers
consider when deciding which product to treat their crops
with. Some examples include REI, tank-mix compatibility,
systemic vs contact vs translaminar, residue, odor, etc.
Seido has many highly desirable characteristics for growers;
4-hour REI, compatible with other pesticides including
biologicals, and little-to-no visible residue. Growers should
mix Seido with their adjuvant of choice to enhance coverage,
penetration, and effectiveness.
