THE FUTURE IS NOW
So, I have to admit, I have a pretty sweet gig. Sometimes, like many of us, I take it for
granted. But often, I am given reminders about how lucky I am. I assume you experience
this same phenomenon.
Horticulture is such an amazing field. We grow, sell and promote natural beauty - and
the numerous benefits of gardening that go along with that beauty. It's actually quite
difficult to take that for granted. But when I do, the best little reminders come directly
from my children.
Something as simple as this scenario: As I sit in my office, typing away, one of them
will stroll in and grab a magazine or a catalog, turn the pages, and tell me how pretty the
flowers are, sometimes detailing which ones are their favorites.
In the spring, these two little guys are my handy helpers in the garden. They go on
garden center runs with me and help pick out which plants to grow. They help me plant,
and then water the garden. Sometimes, if I'm lucky, I can even convince them to pull
the weeds.
All that being said, I think it is so important we all take an active role in inspiring
and nurturing young people's interest in plants. It can be as simple as opening up
your greenhouse for school tours. Or you can take it a step further and offer a class
or fun activity.
On page 24, you can learn about how you can
collaborate with organizations like KidsGardening.
org, which is dedicated to supporting youth
gardening. I also asked our readers in this month's
Chat Room survey (page 10) if they participate in
any kid-friendly events, and I wish I could have
included all their responses.
It is clear, the future is now. As long as we share
our passion with today's youth, I have no doubt
many of those kids will grow to love plants for years to come.
One way to attract any new gardener, young or old, is with a fun new houseplant! Turn
to page 16 to learn about the National Garden Bureau's recent designation of 2022 as
Year of the Peperomia.
As you plan for 2022 and hopefully brainstorm ways to inspire gardening at various
levels, think houseplants! Promote peperomia, and take advantage of the various
materials available for free on the NGB website (www.ngb.org).
I'll be doing my part and taking my boys to a local shop to pick out a peperomia for
their playroom. I get the feeling they will take their role as " plant parents " very seriously
and want to name this new addition to the Dolce household. If you have any ideas, send
them over.
DON'T FORGET

40 program, there's still some time. The last day to nominate an
individual is Jan. 21, 2022.
