AmericanHort HortScholars

AND MEMBER ENGAGEMENT
The AmericanHort HortScholars program sets
students in horticulture on a path to success by
exposing them to the breadth of the horticulture
industry, its opportunities and its leaders. The
program offers students beyond-the-classroom
experience, giving them insight and awareness
of the industry and its supply chain to help
them determine the course they want to set
for their professional future. Through an
application process, six participants are chosen
each year and offered this unique professional
development experience.
" AmericanHort typically receives an
unprecedented number of applicants from
across the country to the HortScholars
program, " said Mary Beth Cowardin,
AmericanHort's vice president of marketing
and member engagement. " This program has
become very competitive, and we take this as a
positive indication that the younger generation
is indeed interested in establishing a career in
horticulture. "
RECOGNIZED AT CULTIVATE'19
If chosen, HortScholars attend Cultivate,
AmericanHort's annual trade show and
convention that takes place each July in
Columbus, Ohio. While there, HortScholars can
see the event from start to finish - helping
with setup, networking with industry leaders
and attending multiple education sessions as
well as CareerUP, a one-day workshop tailored
to emerging horticulture professionals to help
expand their professional skills, define their
future and navigate the green industry career
ladder. It's a unique experience that will help
students learn and make valuable connections
with others in the horticulture industry.
In addition, as a HortScholar, students
receive complimentary meals, lodging, an AllAccess
pass to Cultivate, and a complimentary
one-year student membership in AmericanHort.
Applicants must currently be attending
college as an undergraduate or graduate
student, and majoring in floriculture,
horticulture or a related field. This year's
application deadline is March 1, 2019.
The HortScholars program is just one
example of how AmericanHort showcases
horticulture as an exciting and rewarding
career path. Encouraging the brightest minds
and providing them with rewarding and fun
opportunities is part of the AmericanHort

BENARY OPENS NEW PRODUCTION FACILITY IN CHILE
At the beginning of November 2018, Benary opened its new production
site in Hijuelas, Chile.
Benary has been producing flower seeds in Chile for decades. The region
offers the perfect climate for the production of some of the breeding
company's most important crops.
The new site comprises approximately 5 hectares of land with 3 hectares
of production area and 10,000 square meters of greenhouse area.
Approximately 1,100 square meters will be used for seed cleaning, the
warehouse, dispatch and office space.
Both F1 hybrids and OP seeds are being produced in Hijuelas.
The new production facilities enable Benary to improve its collaboration
with partner companies, to produce critical cultures on its own and to
carry out various post-harvest processes independently.

On Dec. 13, 2018, AmericanHort's Craig Regelbrugge
and Texas A&M's Charlie Hall presented a webinar on
" Outlook 2019: What's on the Economic and Legislative
Horizon in the Coming Year. "
During the 90-minute webinar, Craig and Charlie
discuss some of the changes that have already taken
place in Washington and with our economy as well
as provide their keen insight on where things may be
headed in this year.
