HRI tHRIve Series Puts Spotlight on Industry Research

In the summer of 2020, the Horticultural Research Institute (HRI)
launched a new web-based initiative called the tHRIve series, which
features key research findings that help environmental horticulture
businesses grow. The research is presented in a variety of formats - from
bite-sized research clips to researcher interviews, traditional webinars,
and live question-and-answer panels. Topics cover research that is directly
funded by HRI, as well as federally funded research.
HRI, the AmericanHort Foundation, was created to help improve the
horticultural community through research that addresses critical issues
and new innovations. Research is critical to help the industry succeed and
flourish, and sharing new findings is part of HRI's mission.
HRI provides open access to tHRIve sessions on its website at
HRIresearch.org. Sessions are currently available on everything from
Ralstonia to integrated pest management and young plant research.
Most recently, the tHRIve series welcomed Brian Walsh, a Penn State
Extension horticulture educator, to discuss the latest research information
and strategies to help horticulturalists face off against Spotted Lanternfly
(SLF) in North America. During this popular webinar, attendees were able
to learn more about the status, impacts, and management of SLF, including
the latest information on distribution, host preferences, and impacts on
ornamental plants.
The tHRIve series has also proven to be a great way to connect and
engage the industry with research-backed innovation. To date, tHRIve
webinars and videos have welcomed almost 2,000 participants. But HRI
has no plans of stopping the program here. Upcoming tHRIve topics
include a dive into the research being conducted around pollinator health,
as well as the benefits of plants in all areas of our lives.

PANTONE ANNOUNCES TWO COLORS OF
THE YEAR FOR 2021
Pantone, the global color authority and provider
of professional color language standards and
digital solutions for the design community,
recently announced PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate
Gray and PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating as the
Pantone Color of the Year selection for 2021.
Two independent colors come together to create
an aspirational color pairing, conjoining deeper
feelings of thoughtfulness with the optimistic
promise of a sunshine-filled day.
Illuminating is a bright and cheerful yellow
sparkling with vivacity, a warming yellow shade
imbued with solar power, while Ultimate Gray is
emblematic of solid and dependable elements that
are everlasting and provide a firm foundation.
" The selection of two independent colors
highlight how different elements come together to
express a message of strength and hopefulness
that is both enduring and uplifting, conveying
the idea that it's not about one color or one
person, it's about more than one. The union of an
enduring Ultimate Gray with the vibrant yellow
Illuminating expresses a message of positivity
supported by fortitude, " said Leatrice Eiseman,
executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.
" Practical and rock solid but at the same
time warming and optimistic, this is a color
combination that gives us resilience and hope.
We need to feel encouraged and uplifted, this is
essential to the human spirit. "
SYNGENTA FLOWERS MAKES MOVES IN
HYDRANGEA AND BEGONIA MARKETS
Last month, Syngenta Flowers announced
the purchase of key hydrangea and other select
genetics along with the Hana Bay Flowers brand
from Bay City Flower Co. in Half Moon Bay,
California.
Bay City Flower's long legacy of leadership in
hydrangea and the indoor floral market brings a
wealth of knowledge and best-in-class products
to Syngenta Flowers' own indoor floral portfolio
and helps to bolster Syngenta Flowers' ambition
in continuing to develop its indoor focused line
of genetics.

" Bay City's focus on quality and innovative
breeding is fully aligned with Syngenta's
priority in supporting indoor floral growers
with world-class genetics, " said Mark
Schermer, global head of Syngenta Flowers.
The focus of this transaction is Bay City's
world-class hydrangea varieties, which will
complement Syngenta's existing hydrangea
portfolio. These varieties will be added to
Syngenta's unrooted hydrangea production
program, based out of their Alva, Florida farm.
Syngenta also announced it has entered a
global breeding collaboration with McLeod
Greenhouses in Alberta, Canada. McLeod will
