were stunning in January and late
March. Based on performance,
this Foxglove will be an excellent
addition with hardiness in the
north and summer-long flowering
throughout the country. It is hardy
to Zone 5a and matures to 18 to
24 inches. It will have multiple
application in quarts and gallon
production. Based on the distinctive
inflorescence, it will have excellent
retail appeal. Unrooted cuttings and
liners will be available this fall.
5. DIGITALIS 'PINK PANTHER'
American Takii
This hybrid biennial digitalis
received many accolades at the
California Spring Trials and, based
on performance in the Costa trial,
the comments are justifiable. This
variety is day length neutral, flowers
extremely early, and the flowers
are sterile resulting in multiple
flowers spikes with high impact. The
tubular pink flowers were prolific
and impactful. Based on information
from the breeder, no pinch or PGR
is required for production. This
variety is hardy to Zone 7, so it will
be utilized in annual programs in
the northern regions and, with the
prolonged flower life, bushy habit
and striking flower pattern, will be an
excellent impulse selection at retail.
6. ECHINACEA 'SOMBRERO
TANGO TANGERINE'
Darwin Perennials
Since the introduction of the
PowWow Wild Berry echinacea
series in 2010 and the subsequent
Sombrero series in 2012 with
Hot Coral and Salsa Red, the
Sombrero introductions continue
to impress with new colors,
uniformity and compactness. Last
year I highlighted Tres Amigos, a
wonderful transitional flowering
variety, and for 2020 the new
varieties are Summer Solstice
and Tango Tangerine. In the trial
both varieties manifested the
attributes I mentioned earlier as
well as earliness, flower vibrancy,
unique tones, branching and, most
importantly, a prolific and dramatic
flower canopy. It is hardy to Zone
4b and matures at 18 to 20 inches.
7. ERYSIMUM ERYSISTIBLE
SERIES
Syngenta Flowers
This new Wallflower series is a
cross of linifolium and cheirrii and
the result of 10 years of breeding
development. What will set this
series apart from the competition
is hardiness, large sterile flowers,
multi colors, extended flowering
window, and an upright and
well branched habit that was
striking in the Costa trial. There
are five colors in the series:
Yellow, Sunset, Tricolor, Magenta
and Purple. Magenta was the
most floriferous with vibrant
multicolored flowers. This
uniform series will reach a height
of 18 inches and is hardy to Zone
