GIVING BACK
A
s I write this, there is hope on the horizon.
There is a swell of optimism that life
will return to some semblance of normal
again as the summer unfolds with less restrictions
and less fear. Challenges to retail remain, such as
supply chain slow-downs and employee shortages,
yet consumers are showing up with patience and
understanding and a renewed sense of dedication to
local and small businesses.
Gift Shop Plus and Stationery Trends will host
its first Gift + Stationery Week in August, featuring
webcasts discussing trend forecasting, cause
marketing, and the latest issues facing retailers and
makers. We are excited to honor 40 outstanding
individuals making their mark on the industry with
a Gift + Stationery 40 Under 40 Award ceremony!
The multi-day industry event is interactive and
designed to provide the latest insight and trends as
we recognize the next generation of leaders.
As we get back to business, it's important to
remember those that need help. Products with
a purpose support causes and give retailers and
consumers a way to help. You'll see that theme
throughout this issue in the Editor's Picks Showcase
on page 15, and on page 116.
As a member of the board of directors of Gift for
Life, I'd like to shine a light on the efforts of this
all-volunteer organization. COVID caused all of us
to pivot professionally and personally, and Gift for
Life is no exception. " This was the year of all years to
ask ourselves where we could do the most good for
the most people, " said Cole Daugherty, GFL board
president. " We determined that we could remain true
to our roots while also meeting an immediate need
to support hunger relief and World Central Kitchen
in particular. For the summer we have confirmed
fundraising events connected with Atlanta Market
and Las Vegas Market, and with the help of show
management, board members and our honorary chair
Adam Glassman, we are working toward fundraising
during key trade events including Dallas, New York
and High Point, " he said.
As we venture out this summer to in-person markets
or participate in virtual events, I encourage everyone to
look for opportunities to lend a hand to those in need.
Giving is what this gift industry does best.
