oastal retailers are much more
than merely a stopping point
en route to the beach. They
encapsulate the entire waterfront
experience, offering products that
evoke nostalgia and will serve as
tangible memories for buyers.
U.S. coastal counties are home to
128 million residents; for perspective,
Japan's entire population is roughly
126 million. On top of that, 180 million Americans make 2 billion visits
to the beach annually, according to The Center for Conservation Biology.
Needless to say, coastal communities are a thriving marketplace.
In this second annual edition of Waterfront Living, we present nearly
90 waterfront-inspired products trending across categories such as
stationery, tabletop and jewelry
from the industry's wholesalers,
Coastal Critters
beginning on page 11. Flip also to page 34 for the freshest trends in coastal
apparel and how timeless silhouettes converge with tactile materials to
create an effortlessly chic look that's perfect for sitting waterside.
On page 28 we introduce Indaba, a home décor designer whose name
means " a gathering of people " in Zulu. The company, who also graces
this issue's cover, aims to do just that - create a welcoming living space
that is subtly yet innately coastal.
In these pages, we've aimed not only to showcase the latest products
and trends but to also epitomize just how vital coastal retailers are to
their communities. Gift shops are a reflection of their towns, which are
facing unique challenges with the changing climate and increased rate
of natural disasters.
Leaning on the community is what sustains residents and businesses
during times of need. Turn to page 38 to read about The Islander, who
was affected by Hurricane Ian and awarded $10,000 to rebuild from
nonprofit Heart on Main Street. Its owner, Anita Cereceda, has found a
safe haven in her community.
