How We Started ...
The origin story of Parker Davis' StepStake® nursery
markers goes back over 30 years when we were
looking for a better way to mark the trees in our
family's Fraser Fir fields in the high country of North
Carolina. We were selling our larger stakes for real
estate and political signs and had created a smaller
stake for use with residential security system signs.
With a little tweaking, we created a system that would
work well with our firs at all stages of their growth.
While the initial stake was 16 " long, we produced
varying lengths from 8 " up to 48 " to make them
compatible with everything from seedlings up to
trees that were ready to be harvested. We produced
corrugated plastic cards in 7 different colors and
several different sizes so that we could color-code
the various areas of our fields depending on each
area's particular status.
Once we had been using these for a year or two,
we realized that others might find our nursery
marker stakes useful as well, so we took a box of our
markers to the Green & Growin' show, where we
were hoping to sell some hemlocks that were getting
too big amidst a glut of supply. While we ended up
bulldozing a good percentage of the hemlocks, we
had found a great new market for our StepStakes®!
Today our markers are used throughout North
America where they are not only used by growers
and wholesale nurseries, but also by garden centers
for signage in their businesses. Through several
decades of talking to our customers, we have added
a few additional sizes of cards, but the basic system
remains the same: Galvanized steel stakes with
corrugated polypropylene cards that are coronatreated
to hold ink over a long period of time. The
result is a durable yet inexpensive signage system.
While the cards were initially written on with
permanent markers, things have evolved to where
many, if not most, of the cards are used with a selfadhesive
printed label.
So, here we are, 35 years later, and while a lot has
changed in the world, our StepStakes® are still helping
businesses sell their plants from coast to coast. We
look forward to continuing to serve the nursery
industry over the next 35 years.
