A NOTE ABOUT NATIVES
Home gardeners tend to describe
native plants by the benefits they
believe natives offer, said Katie Tamony,
chief marketing officer and trendspotter
at Monrovia. She said from the research
Monrovia has done, they found there's
this perception - especially if you're
a beginner - that a native plant isn't
going to take as much work because it's
meant to grow in the area it's native to.
" We encourage people to think about
creating diversity in their garden, " she
said. " Have a healthy garden that's
attracting everything that you want to
attract, that is easy to take care of, that's
beautiful. Have some natives, but don't
be afraid to mix in some cultivars that
are climate appropriate. "
Tamony also pointed out that
Monrovia's research identified
confusion about native, non-native
and invasive plants.
" There are a lot of people that think,
if it's not native, it must be invasive.
One of our garden center retailers said
it best: 'There's a lot of fear around
planting the wrong thing. And natives
have become a way for people to feel
like they're doing the right thing, they're
doing a safe thing in their gardens.'
" We think there's a lot of education
that can happen from garden centers, "
she said. " When people walk in and
say they're looking for natives, we're
encouraging our [garden retailers] to
try to probe a little bit more - ask,
'when you say native, what did you
have in mind?' or 'why are you looking
for a native today?' - to get more
information from them.

Robles said they're working
toward using beneficials in
propagation so the beneficials
can work their way over
to other greenhouses,
integrating them earlier and
controlling everything from
the beginning all the way to
the end.
" What we don't want to
do is take action when [the
problem is] already there, "
he said. " We want to have
preventatives in place to
help us with that. It helps us
reduce the use of any type of
chemical that we have to use.
This has been very successful
so far. "
