EDITOR'S LETTER
(Spring) Trials
and Tangents
One thing leads to another,
right? Whether that reminds you
of the children's book " If You Give
a Mouse a Cookie " or the Fixx song
might depend on your generation,
but it certainly was true for me
while putting together this issue.
Going through the thoughts and
ideas I jotted down at California
Spring Trials - not to mention the
hundreds of photos the L&GR team took - a number
of themes came together: branded packaging for better
sell-through at retail, eco- and pollinator-friendly varieties,
grab-and-go plants, and the still-on-trend cut flowers. Turn
to page 14 for more retail trends from CAST.
Another theme we repeatedly saw was seasonextending
varieties. I caught up with a few breeding
companies post-CAST to find out more about what
varieties they're promoting as three-season crops and hear
ideas from them on how to merchandise these plants. Flip
to page 20 for the story.
Promoting Pollinators
When I reached out to Diane Blazek, executive director
of National Garden Bureau (NGB), to find out what
her organization offers to help spread the buzz about
pollinators, she was excited to share that they recently
released a free e-book on pollinators that both garden
centers and their customers can use to learn more.
" I would love for garden centers to push gardeners to
sign up for that e-book, " she says. Read more about what
materials NGB and other green industry groups offer to
promote pollinators on page 38.
Cultivate Is Coming
Cultivate'23 returns to Columbus, Ohio, July 15-18.
I chatted with speaker Debbie Foisy, who is giving the
presentation " Turn Your Boring Plant Expertise Into Fun,
Catchy Videos, " to find out what she's learned in her
10 years of creating videos for her garden center, Deb's
Greenhouse. Find the story on page 34.
