Pantone surprised everyone by
naming a pair of shades the COTY
in 2016. The aim was to evoke
peace and mindfulness while also
highlighting the shift in fashion
that brought about blurring of
gender lines.
" Joined together, Rose Quartz and
Some favorites for a big punch
of Marsala in containers are
'Easy Wave Burgundy Velour'
petunias. In nature, Chocolate
Cosmos (Cosmos atrosanguineus),
a Mexican native, bears this color
without breeding influencing it.
The sophisticated palates that
include Marsala were perfect for
florals, but don't discount how
they were used in foliage as well -
such as in coleus, which is a shade
well-used by Proven Winners in a
number of their coleus varieties.
Serenity demonstrate an inherent
balance between a warmer
embracing rose tone and the cooler
tranquil blue, reflecting connection
and wellness as well as a soothing
sense of order and peace, " said

director of Pantone Color Institute.
In our industry, these shades are
relatively well-represented but not
often paired. Decadence Deluxe
'Pink Truffles' baptisia from Proven
Winners is lovely with strands of
delicate rose quartz blossoms.
For bigger rose quartz coverage,
think Crystal Pink sedum from
Monrovia. In the Serenity shade,
look at Techno light blue lobelia
from Syngenta Flowers or Baby
a fresh, lush reminder of what
this industry represents. Pantone
calls Greenery " emblematic of
the pursuit of personal passions
and vitality. " It was chosen to
represent the green movement
globally, reminding people in all
industries that the innate beauty
of this earth is something we
should not take for granted.
Given that horticulture is the
" original'' green industry, this
one may have been the easiest to
emulate yet. Mixing textures and
including green blossoms allowed
the COTY to shine in all the industry
did in 2017. From hellebore to
hydrangeas and zinnias, gladiolus
to chrysanthemum, green blossoms
are not newcomers to horticulture.
2018: Ultraviolet
Pantone noted the mysticism
and allusion to a higher plain
of thinking that inspires this
purply-blue tone. They hoped it
would invoke inventiveness and
imagination in all industries that
take inspiration by the COTY. A side
theme is that of counterculture,
since it's a shade that was used
by icons like Jimi Hendrix, Prince
and David Bowie, the latter two
who died in 2016. Their influences
are still permeating culture in
unexpected ways.
In horticulture, deep shades
of violet are found in a plethora
of varieties. Allium 'Purple
Rain', alluding once again to
Prince, adds a brilliant swath of
Ultraviolet to any garden and
is loved by pollinators. Arabella
clematis from Monrovia fades
from ultraviolet to soft lavender
